A quick look at the history of Open Source

It can be said that in the early years of computing, pretty much everything was Open Source. But then propriety4software was born, and it soon came to be considered as the model used by many people. It was in the late 70s and early 80s when the roots of open source software movement were put in place.

One man who played a rather significant role in this movement is Richard Stallman, a former programmer at the MIT AI Lab, who resigned and launched the GNU Project and Free Software Foundation. With the GNU Project’s goal of building a free operating system in mind, Stallman began coding and then shared his cods with others in the community. His instructions were simple: “Share this code with your fellow users. Learn from it. Improve upon it. And when you’re done, please give something back to the community.”

And so began the process of creating free software that encourages peer review and free distribution.
